The Ayurvedic system of medicine clearly defines this disease and its line of treatment. Diabetes mellitus is known by the name of Asarva (prameha) by Indians since Vedic times. Diabetes is known as diabetes in Ayurveda. Madhu Meha which has been linked to diabetes mellitus has become a global problem despite advances in modern science. India has been projected by WHO as the country with the fastest growing population of diabetics. It is estimated that between 1995 and 2025, there will be a 195% increase in diabetic patients in India. It is meharoga (major disease) because it affects most of the body and every cell of human physiology. Ancient Indian physicians not only described the sweetness of urine as one of the major symptoms, but also the association of the disease with disturbances of the 5 sheaths of the body - anamaya kosha {food cover}, pranamaya kosha {energy cover} , manomaya kosha {mind sheath}, vigyan maya kosha {intellectual sheath} and anandamaya kosha {ananda sheath}. Prameha is also described in other classical texts. The word Prameha is derived from the root Mih Sechene, which means to give water, which means diluting of everything in the body (not just urine).
